The apparent result of a love connection between a Porsche 911 and a Prius the Porsche 918 Spyder ($TBA) is a new plug-in hybrid Porsche concept car. Combining a 500hp V8 with two electric motors, one on each axle, the Porsche 918 Spyder has a total of 718hp on board. The 918 Spyder is a parallel hybrid just like the Prius in that the two powertrains, gas and electric, can operate together or independently. This means that you can every option from maximum efficiency (electric only) to maximum performance (gas and electric). The car can go up to 16 miles in its electric only E-Drive mode. Hybrid mode is for everyday driving. Sport Hybrid mode uses both powertrains tipping the needle towards performance. Race mode means all systems are go and this thing will move. In Race Mode the car can do 0-62 in 3.2 seconds, 198 mph at the top and Porsche says it can even do the Nordschleife in less than 7:30 minutes. The 918 does all this and maintains a maximum 78 mpg fuel economy. A seven-speed PDK transmission, a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body, powerful brakes and that prancing horse (Ferrari) -inspired front end round out this eco/green-enthusiast’s dream ride.
