The overloaded sherpa look is not a winner in the city, neither is the school kid backpack. Regardless, there are times when a briefcase doesn’t cut it for storage space. All-around black-bag purveyor Ignoble has a solution in the form of the Ignoble Lorna Case Backpack ($290).

The bag is constructed from 1680D ballistic nylon with a fully lined nylon Ripston interior and YKK nylon zipper closers ensure your every-day-carry doesn’t end up on the street. At 25 liters the bag is more than capable of carrying everything you could possibly need for your jaunt into town and with padded straps and a padded air-mesh back the bag will carry it all quite comfortably. For organization the bag houses a generous dual-zippered file-folder compartment and a large dual-zippered main compartment with an internal hanging-pocket and book-sleeve. When you’re on the go you can access your phone and other on-the-go essentials via a top-of-bag stash-pocket.

The Lorna also features a simple but very effective shoulder strap system that allows the backpack to quickly convert into a side-carry briefcase with an excellent zipper pocket up top large enough for a keeping everything from a 17″ MacBook Pro to an iPad at hand.

If there is one quality I appreciate in a bag above all else, it is durability. Behind that is functionality, style and comfort all of which rely on numero uno. When all four are present and accounted for, well, that’s just a whole lot of icing on the sartorial cake. The Lorna is one well-iced sartorial cake.

The backpack is as tough as it looks, more than willing to take a beating and look great doing it. The open platform of the bag and generous size allow for a lot of variability in its use; it’s perfectly suited for use as a weekend bag, briefcase or roadtrip. The Lorna will easily carry a change or two of clothes, a jacket, laptop, camera and a few lenses, phone and all the chargers you need to keep things going.

It is the perfect bag for a light business trip. You can wear the bag as a traditional backpack for comfort when fully loaded. Drop your change of clothes, dop-kit, etc… off at the hotel, convert to a briefcase and head to a meeting. I have grown to love how mutable the Lorna is and have used it for everything from a last minute hike to out-of-state interview carry-on. Here’s a list of what I was recently able to fit in the bag for a short trip:

  • 5 t-shirts
  • 1 wind-stopper jacket
  • 1 dress shirt
  • 1 pair jeans
  • 1 pair slacks
  • 5 pairs socks & underwear
  • 1 pair sneakers
  • 1 stuffed dop-kit
  • 17″ MacBook Pro
  • iPhone 5
  • Nikon D90 body, Nikon 24-70mm F2.8, Nikon 35mm
  • Moleskine planner
  • Cables and chargers

I’m sure I missed a few things, but suffice it to say that the Lorna will carry it all. The bag was pretty damn heavy, sure, but it was functional. Slim it down for your daily commute with your laptop, gym clothes and sneakers and it’s more than manageable. Plus my dog thinks it makes one hell of a headrest.
