THE REVIEW:

It is not shocking that one of the first things Chrysler did after rising up from the ashes of bankruptcy was to replace the underwhelming Sebring. What is shocking, however, is just how much better the Chrysler 200 is compared to the model it replaces. The 200 is not a complete redesign, but it is a thoroughly reworked car to such a degree that any comparison to its predecessor is unwarranted. Besides a sportier stance, exterior styling tweaks and greatly improved handling, the 200 gained a powerful V6 and a very attractive interior makeover.

Gone is the embarrassing Sebring, in its place a respectable choice for a midsize sedan. The Chrysler 200 is offerred as a sedan or two-door convertible. There are four trim levels and a choice of two different power-trains. Entry-level LX, midrange Touring and top-of-the-line Limited packages are all powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. A brand new 3.6-liter V6 is standard in the sport S version and is offered as an option in all packages but the LX, it is good for 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The LX gets a four-speed automatic whereas all other models feature a six-speed auto.

All models come reasonably well-equipped, even the LX gets air-conditioning, keyless entry, power windows and cruise control. Touring models add alloy wheels, automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio. The Limited and S model get upscale additions including leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats, a premium audio system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and a 28-gigabyte hard drive.

Even the LX base model comes reasonably well-equipped with air-conditioning, keyless entry, full power accessories and cruise control. Touring models add nice-to-have extras like alloy wheels, automatic climate control, a power driver seat and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio. A navigation system and sunroof are optional add-ons.

The 200’s exterior is noticeably classier looking compared to the Sebring and it’s more aggressive look is accented nicely by distinctive LED daytime running and brake lights. The styling though somewhat aggressive is noticeably less so than its bigger brother the 300, I think it’s a better look for an everyday driver. The interior of the vehicle is also quite upscale and has been made-over quite nicely sporting sleek styling and high-quality materials throughout. The car was very quiet and comfortable over highly variable terrain.

The Chrysler 200 performs very well on the road with more than adequate acceleration from its 3.6-liter V6. The six-speed automatic the powerful motor is attached to is no slouch itself offering up quick, confident shifts without a stutter or misstep. The V6 is good for 29 MPG highway and 19 MPG in the city, in my testing I averaged 24.

THE PRICE:

The Chrysler 200 starts at $18,995; the Limited starts at $24,685. After adding navigation, the 3.6-liter V6 and premium sounds my Chrysler 200 Limited totaled at $25,250.

WINDUP:

The 2013 Chrysler 200 is a stylish, comfortable and with the optional 3.6-liter V6 under the hood quite fun to drive.
