A mother who started a beekeeping business from her kitchen table while on maternity leave has revealed she is on the verge of making £2.5million.

Kelly Parsons, 24, from Bristol, started making her first wax figures aged 18 and sold them on her Facebook group, which has more than 13,000 members.

Although it started as a side job, the creative entrepreneur decided to use her maternity leave in March 2018 to put all her energy into Sassy Shop Weeks.

By the time Luca was born two months later, the company was earning £20,000 a month – which allowed Kelly to quit her job to search.

Kelly – who is expecting her second child at Christmas – said she always knew she would start her own business and even sold silver rings to her friends when she was young.

She said: “I’ve always been a creative person and deep down I always knew I wanted to do my own thing. I didn’t want a normal 9-5 because I was always itching to get out of the office.

Like many teenage girls, Kelly loved Lush bath bombs and was intrigued by the idea of ​​repurposing Twilight into a candle.

She said: “I looked it up and saw how many people were selling them on Estee – so I thought, can I really make my own?

“I had never done this before and it was a year of trial and error. And I was trying to sell it!”

Armed with a starter kit and a pot of soup, Kelly began experimenting with flavors from her kitchen table at the home she shares with her fiance, Theo—and perfected her fusion flavors three times in a year.

In 2017, everything changed when Kelly found a Facebook group where more than 5,000 users were talking about their wax melting needs.

Determined to generate as much interest as possible, Kelly held a contest in which he rewarded the person who invited the most people to the group with free melted wax.

Two years after creating the Facebook group, Kelly now has more than 13,000 members and receives about 100 requests to join a day.

The businesswoman believes that the Facebook group is responsible for 70% of returning customers for Sassy Shop Weeks.

He added: This platform gives me the opportunity to communicate with my customers and give them what they want.

And when they feel promoted and heard, they care more about the business, and when we sell, we ask them what they want.

“It creates such a buzz because they hear it and we know the stock will sell.”

But when she started Sassy Shop Weeks as a maternity leave business, Kelly started earning £20,000 a month working just a few hours a day.

“When Theo came home in the evening, I was in the kitchen making wax for a few hours,” she explained.

“Or if my mother came to calm me down, I would never calm down and make wax!

“I can make 200 sugars a day—but if I have two kettles of soup, I can make 400 in three hours.”

To earn £50,000 a month, Kelly realized he needed 9-9 hours a day – and that’s when he realized he needed to hire someone.

“We did everything we could to stay in the kitchen as much as possible,” Kelly said. “But that didn’t make sense – you couldn’t even walk past my house and the living room was full of bags of royal mail.”

In July 2019, Kelly moved Sissy Shop Weeks to an office 800 feet down the road — which she says is “a dream come true.”

But within six months, the company had outgrown the premises and is now based in a 5,000 sq ft warehouse in Bristol and employs 20 people.

Currently, the company can produce 15,000 meltable bars per week — but when their 10,000-pound industrial melter hits the market later this year, they’ll be able to produce that much in one day.

As someone who has struggled with mental health in the past, Kelly is proud of the growth of her business and says her struggles have inspired her to achieve her goals.

She said: I didn’t want to work 9-5 all my life, I wanted to be a mother, I wanted to give birth.

“And because I loved it so much, I found myself very anxious and depressed. I didn’t like my job, I wanted to get pregnant and I wasn’t there in my life.”

Amazingly, the business has boomed during the coronavirus pandemic, growing 30 percent during the holidays as people buy them as gifts.

“Our gift cards sell really well on our website and customers love buying our watermelons as gifts,” Kelly said.

However, Kelly’s plans to open their first store have been put on hold – but they still manage to bring out the bath bombs and spray the room.

As of August this year, the brand sold more than 30,000 wax melters — compared to 7,000 last year.

This year, the brand’s estimated revenue is £2.5m – which makes mum “feel happy” when she thinks about it.

We double our salary every six months. I’m very excited about the growth and I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied.”
