Everyone has heard of ’420′, we all know it has something to do with smoking pot, but when you ask someone how the day came to be you’re likely to get about a thousand different answers.

Some of the many spurious explanations include:

It’s the number of chemical compounds in marijuana.

According to High Times magazine the number is actually 315.

April 20 is the date that Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, or Janis Joplin died.

All of those are incorrect.

The 20th of April is the best time to plant marijuana.

Given that various parts of the U.S. occupy different USDA planting zones this one makes no sense.

420 is the penal code section for marijuana use in California.

But Section 420 of the California penal code refers to obstructing entry on public land. On 1 January 2004 the Governor of California signed that state’s Senate Bill 420, which regulates marijuana used for medical purposes. But, the bill came years after the term ’420′ was associated with marijuana.

It’s the Los Angeles or New York police radio code for marijuana smoking in progress.

Nope. It’s not a radio code at all.

Albert Hofmann took the first deliberate LSD trip at 4:20 on 19 April 1943.

Just a weird coincidence.

When the Grateful Dead toured, they always stayed in Room 420.

Dennis McNally, Grateful Dead Productions spokesman says no.

Something about Hitler’s birthday

Because that makes total sense.

The true origins of 4/20 according to Wikipedia:

The earliest use of the term began among a group of teenagers in San Rafael, California in 1971. Calling themselves the Waldos, because “their chosen hang-out spot was a wall outside the school,” the group first used the term in connection to a fall 1971 plan to search for an abandoned cannabis crop that they had learned about. The Waldos designated the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 pm as their meeting time. The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase “4:20 Louis”. Multiple failed attempts to find the crop eventually shortened their phrase to simply “4:20″, which ultimately evolved into a codeword that the teens used to mean pot-smoking in general.

Now you know.

The over-night sensation we can’t stop talking about, 23 year old Jeremy Lin. He’s just 6′ 3″ and he’s the first Taiwanese-American player in the NBA. Lin was born in Los Angeles and he went to Harvard with no athletic scholarship, graduated and went un-drafted, was signed by the Warriors and didn’t play a game, spent some time in the D-League and now he’s with the New York Knicks. The rest is history.

He’s single-handedly taken the NBA by storm. It’s a fantastic story. A modest and fantastically talented player, playing his heart out goes on one of the hottest streaks in NBA history. The Knicks were having a mediocre season, but things changed when Lin started to play well. He’s got 6 straight games with 20+ points under his belt and he’s on his way to a record breaking season. The Knicks now sit at 14-15 for the season with a shot at getting back to .500 if Lin stays hot.

He played his best game against the Lakers, with an incredible 38 points, leading the team to a 92-85 victory. He lacks the flashy athleticism of a super-star player but he’s catching attention in a more important way – putting up numbers, hopefully he can keep it rolling.

He pulled off this incredible game ending three last night.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xv2bl2bXRGs#at=22

Is the man unstoppable? Probably not. Every fire burns out eventually and Jeremy Lin’s is burning a lot longer and a lot brighter than anyone expected. That doesn’t mean he isn’t the real deal though. His current numbers are absurd for now eventually they’ll fall back to human-like levels but his ability to get to the free throw line and his quickness to the rim won’t be going anywhere. No one goes on a 6 game hot streak like this on accident. He certainly can play.

He won’t average 25 points per game if only because of Melo’s imminent return. The decrease in scoring will be perceived as the dwindling of Lin’s bright lights, but I think Lin will be a player to keep your eyes on for a very long time and optimistically I think Melo will end up amplifying Lin’s play. That said if Melo was playing last night you and I both know who would’ve taken that last shot.

This has been a weird week in sports with baseball holding their winter meetings, the NBA returning from their lockout, more college conference realignments and the NFL getting closer to a playoff picture.

The Miami Marlins have a new stadium and new look and seem to have found a money tree. The club signed closer Heath Bell to a 27 million dollar deal. They followed up that move by signing free agent short stop Jose Reyes to a 106 million dollar contract. For a team, who in the past, doesn’t like to spend much money they are looking more like the Yankees this off-season. The Marlins have now offered Albert Pujols a 10 year 200+ million dollar contract, but it sounds like the St. Louis Cardinals still have the upper hand in landing him. Many people thought Pujols would be the last free agent target of the Marlins, but today they have made another splash in the market. The Marlins today signed free agent starting pitcher Mark Buehrle to a 58 million dollar deal. Their front office has even stated that if they don’t sign Pujols they will attempt to sign the next best free agent first baseman in Prince Fielder.

The NFL playoffs are getting closer and closer to being set. The Denver Broncos who seemed out of the playoff picture just five weeks ago are now on top of their division and would host the Pittsburgh Steelers if the playoffs started today. The Packers remain undefeated and look to have a 16-0 season all wrapped up if they continue to play at the level they have so far this season. Green Bay and San Fransisco, the top two teams in the NFC, are also the first two teams in the NFL to clinch their respective divisions. All four of the AFC divisions could still change and potentially could come down to the last two weeks of the season that have many divisional games scheduled to be played. You can use the ESPN Playoff Predictor to set your own playoff picture.

We also saw an end to the NBA lockout and teams are getting back together, but we have also seen that very little changed in the NBA’s new CBA. There is now talk that the CBA that was agreed on may not be signed off on after all. Many players and owners don’t believe that the new deal is any better than the previous CBA. This week has also held many rumors that include superstars Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. Some of these rumors include Howard and Paul joining Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles with the Lakers. These rumors prove that nothing was fixed in the NBA negotiations. Many fans believed that the NBA lockout was mainly to bring parity and competition to the league. Moves like these, however, would make the league even less competitive and take away some of what parity did exist.

Now one of the weirdest things that is going on in sports right now. Many college conferences are attempting to make their conferences stronger by adding new teams and bringing in teams from other conferences. Currently the Mountain West and Conference USA are talking about merging together. The weirdest story at this time, however, is the schools that the Big East is looking to bring into their conference. The Big East is expanding and has officially announced the addition of the Houston Cougars, Boise St. Broncos, San Diego St. Aztecs, Central Florida Knights and SMU Mustangs. Nothing says East like the Broncos from Boise, Idaho and the Aztecs from San Diego, California. I mean how much more east can you go than California, right? I understand that these conferences are attempting to become bigger and stronger in an attempt to get more money and respect from the BCS, but this conferece realignment needs to be done in another way.

The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto V has arrived. There are a lot of disparate environments – mountains, high-rises, beach – but all centered around Vinewood, a stand-in for Los Angeles. We’re definitely getting back into some of the beloved San Andreas stomping grounds.

Our hero is a dad who says he’s trying to be a good guy, but it’s a Grand Theft Auto game, so we’ll see how that works out. My theory: Old Tommy Vercetti – Vice City – moves to San Andreas?

ESPN’s 30 for 30 series has been great. The documentaries are insightful and provide a background view on some of the most important events in sports over the past 30 years. As a Chicago Cubs fan I was weary of whether or not I wanted to watch “Catching Hell” the 2003 NLCS has run through my head millions of times. I can better remember where I was for each game and how each turned out than for any other sporting event I have watched. As a Steelers fan you’d think that Super Bowl 45 would still haunt me. Sure the Steelers played horrible and it was hard to watch, but I still better remember the 2003 NLCS.

I was 14, a huge Cubs fan, vacationing with my family in Los Angeles, California. My Dad and I left Universal Studios early that day to go watch Game 6 of the NLCS. I was wearing my Mark Prior jersey (which still hangs proudly in my closet) and probably proclaimed 50 times that day that the Cubs were World Series bound.

The Cubs were up 3-0 when Juan Pierre hit a towering fly ball towards the left field crowd. Wrong place, wrong time.

“That could be huge.”

Steve Lyons statement directly after the Bartman play proved to be nothing short of the truth. After the Bartman play the Chicago Cubs not only lost their composure, but they also went on to lose the game and the series. For Cubs fans we all knew that Bartman had been taken out of the stadium for safety reasons and that due to death threats he had gone into hiding so to speak, but “Catching Hell” gave a chilling view of the “Friendly” Confines.

I was 14 and every sports show told me that it was Bartman’s fault and their was a period where I too blamed him, but I am smart enough to look back and see that it was nowhere near being his fault that the Cubs lost. I felt ashamed of being a Cub fan when a clip from the stadium showed Bartman being escorted to safety by security guards the following line struck me more than any other:

“Put a 12 gauge in his mouth and pull the trigger!”

Wow, I thought, the guy did what any fan would; he reached for a fly ball. Like I said before, wrong place, wrong time. Look at the play again. How many fans are reaching for the ball? At least 5-6. All of you other fans who reached for that ball should Thank God every night that it didn’t hit your hands.

If you didn’t get a chance to watch the Documentary attempt to find it on-demand or when it airs again. It’s worth the watch for any fan: (continue below for my take on the Bartman hate)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2oT7rTdgCE[/youtube]

It hurt to watch the way my fellow Cubs fans treated Steve Bartman after the play; I don’t believe he did anything wrong. The game is reffered to as the Bartman game. Why isn’t it the Gonzales game? Alex Gonzales is the player who booted a tailor made double play ball that would have ended the inning.

The Dusty Baker game? Baker left Prior in probably too long and allowed him to give up the lead even though he had already thrown well over 120 pitches.

There are so many other things that went wrong. The Gonzales play messed up two outs; Bartman only, maybe, messed up one. Moises Alou stated in an interview a few years ago that he didn’t believe he would have made the catch anyway. If that’s true Alou here is my thought:

You don’t freak out, you walk back to left cool and collected. Therefore the fans don’t see it as a big deal, the players don’t get any doubt in their minds, and I like to think the Cubs go on to win.

I’ll be honest here; I didn’t finish watching the documentary yet. When I heard Kerry Wood’s home run was in the movie I just couldn’t bare to watch it again. I thought when Wood hit that home run in game 7 the Cubs were back in the driver seat. When Alou hit a 2-run homer the next inning to put the Cubs up 5-3 it was over in my mind. Little did I know the Marlins would come back and win that game and the World Series.

It hurts me to see how Cubs fans treated Steve Bartman; I hope that one day everyone else can stop blaming Bartman. If it were up to me Bartman would have a suite at Wrigley Field every home game to make up for the way he was treated in 2003. Hell, I’d have a suite for Bartman and a family of Goats.

I would like to finish up by praising Bartman for the way he handled the situation. He just stayed in his seat, he didn’t talk back to anyone. When he was hit with food and beer he just wiped it off and continued to watch the game. He was being yelled at and pummeled with concessions and he took it with a straight face. All the best to you Steve Bartman I hope that one day the rest of Cub Fandom will forgive you and understand that it was NOT your fault.

One year your company has $45 million in funding, and the next you’ve been delisted from the NASDAQ. It’s just another day in the life of an entrepreneur. And it’s exactly what happened to Eric J. Kuhn.

Kuhn started Varsity Books, an online marketplace for college textbooks in 1999. The company received a massive amount of funding and went public, the stock market crashed and his company went from 250 employees to 14. But in 2000, Kuhn decided to pivot and Varsity Books became an online bookstore for private high schools. The company found huge success in this model and Varsity Books was and is the only company to have ever been re-listed on the NASDAQ. In 2006, Kuhn sold his shares and left the company.

So is he sitting on a yacht somewhere living it up? No, an entrepreneur never stops.

Interview with Eric Kuhn

We had the opportunity to ask Eric Kuhn a few questions about entrepreneurship, FoundersCard and the ups and downs of being a founder:

1. To what do you owe much of your success?

I suppose the key has been sheer determination matched with a reasonably good mix of being both a dreamer and practical. Like every entrepreneur, I’ve faced my share of challenges. I’ve learned to approach the most difficult ones in a way that strives to emerge stronger in the end. Lose a major deal, use it as a motivator to get an even larger one.

Also, I’ve learned to above all, listen and learn from others, but in the end follow my own instincts.

2. Any tips for recent college graduates as they enter the jobs market?

Drop all attitude and be willing to help out with every aspect of building the business. Learn how to do as many things well with minimize supervision. It’s never too early to understand what drives your company financially and become a contributor to that.

3. You’ve clearly had your fair share of ups and downs, what motivates you to get back on your feet?

I feel personally and deeply responsible for the businesses that I create. I never contemplate walking away, but instead channel my energy into figuring out how I can make things work—even if it takes 20 tries.

4. I’ve read that you’re not a big fan of the word “networking” but for lack of a better word and as an all-star networker yourself, what tips do you have for budding entrepreneurs looking to improve their networking abilities?

Many entrepreneurs have a natural instinct to spend all of their time building their own company. Make sure you to spend at least thirty minutes a day reaching out to or staying in touch with quality people.

5. Can you give us some background on your entrepreneurial pursuits and how Founderscard came to be?

I started my first company in 1997 called VarsityBooks. It was a web 1.0 business that had an unusual amount of ups and downs even for an early internet company. We raised $40 million in vc money and went public in early 2000, only to have to rebuild the business after the dot com crash. Fortunately we were able to find a profitable niche, get relisted and eventually sell the company.

The idea for FoundersCard was from my own experience as an entrepreneur. I wanted to do create an amazing concept that would reward, inspire and help other entrepreneurs who are the true value-creators and keys to our economic future.

6. Currently most of your membership is based in the US, what plans do you have to branch out?

We have already started to growing our benefits collection globally. Many of our most popular benefits are also for members outside the US. We are also having a networking event next month in London and plan to expand continue the growth.

7. How quickly is Founderscard currently growing as it seems to be spreading mostly by word of mouth at the moment?

We are focused on high quality growth in terms of adding new members, new benefits and events. We are now accepting new members on a daily basis while maintaining a high standard for everything we do.

8. What scale do you foresee Founderscard reaching? Are you looking for a Groupon sized user base or will Founderscard remain a rather exclusive pursuit?

In many ways we are the opposite of the flash or daily deal model. We have a small but deeply connected true membership with deep and meaningful ongoing arrangement with our partners. All of our members pay for membership and they receive elite access and privileges that are incredibly substantive.

9. What’s next for Founderscard?

FoundersCard was designed to be a vehicle for entrepreneurs to share and contribute. I’d expect the future to continue to be shaped by the input of our members.

During his ups and downs as a founder Eric Kuhn thought, “Why isn’t there a dedicated community for entrepreneurs?”

Entrepreneurs need to travel and why shouldn’t they receive the same treatment as any other CEO? But, a lack of a corporate discount necessitates that they travel on a budget. This revelation led Kuhn to develop the FoundersCard, an organization he now successfully runs with over 5,000 members.

FoundersCard

So what is FoundersCard? Essentially, it’s a loyalty program for entrepreneurs with stellar networking events, benefits include exclusive discounts from hundreds of businesses including Apple, Rackspace, Moo, FedEx, GigaOM Pro, Equinox gyms, spas, online shopping sites like Gilt City, hip hotels like The Standard, airlines like Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines, telecom companies like AT&T, and other great services like Zipcar, Uber, LimoRes and Roomorama.

FoundersCard hosts several networking events throughout the year in New York City, San Francisco and Miami, with Boston and Los Angeles coming soon. Members say they are an incredible opportunity to mingle with other members and cultivate a tight-knit, mutually benefitting community.

FoundersCard accepted its first application in December 2009. Membership is by invite and referral only; because of this, they tend to have a very high acceptance rate. The application is a simple process and takes no longer than 15 minutes to fill out. Membership rates are $495 per year plus a $65 initiation fee; however, ZipRage might be able to help you out on that.

Discounted Annual Rate for ZipRage readers

Not only can we get you into the referral only membership but we can also get you a pretty significant discount.

Memberships are $495, but the kind folks over at FoundersCard were nice enough to extend a 50% off discount ($249) to ZipRage readers. Just use the code FCZIPRAGE at founderscard.com/membership and you will be eligible for a $249 annual rate.

Whether you like perks, learning about new services or meeting new people in your tech community, FoundersCard has given entrepreneurs one more reason to leave the corporate life and go out on their own.

I don’t have the resources necessary to wear a Rolex as my daily beater, few people do. But if you happen to own a nice automatic timepiece, you really need to house it somewhere a little more fitting than the sock drawer. We suggest a watch winder. Not only is a watch winder an awesome whirling gizmo to keep your watch ticking. It’s also an investment to extend the life of your prized man jewelry.

Automatic watches are designed to be worn continuously and not rewound on a daily basis because it causes excessive and unnecessary stress and wear to the internal mechanics.

Wolf Designs has perfected the art of making fine watch winders over their 175 years in the business. Based in Los Angeles, Wolf Designs is best known for making branded watch winders, in addition to OEM winders from the likes of Cartier, Baume and Mercier.

The new Wolf Designs Viceroy 2.7 Module Watch Winder With Storage ($299) comes with a plethora of awesome upgrades from the 2.0 Module Watch Winders. 2.7 sees the addition of a back-lit LCD display and new control panel that allows the user to choose from uni-directional or bi-directional rotation and the ability to select from a range of 300 to 1,200 turns per day. Programming the winder is incredibly easy and the patented “snug fit” cuff accommodates large watches and locks with click so you know your watch is secure.

I’ve had my Wolf Designs Viceroy 2.7 Module Watch Winder with Storage for a couple of weeks now. The winder sports a very solid construction and the ease of use is very impressive. I literally set it two weeks ago and have since pretty much forgotten about it.

The luxury of a watch winder usually comes with a very steep price tag. With the new Wolf Designs 2.7 Module Watch Winder it’s a more affordable luxury. MSRP for the Viceroy 2.7 Single Watch Winder with Storage we tested is listed at $350, which is only a fraction of the price when compared to other luxury winders from Orbita and Underwood.

Here’s how to take a shot at getting your hands on a Viceroy 2.7 Module Watch Winder With Storage:

Sign up for the ZipRage – Weekly Dispatch for a chance to win! Pretty easy. Ends 9/27

If that’s not enough, for a second chance to win simply:

Become a fan of our Facebook Page Ends 9/27
