“Tim Tebow Time”? Are you kidding me?

Lets get this out of the way before all the Tebow faithfuls start to freak out. Tebow is one of the best college players of all time, there I said it.

However, there have been better college quarterbacks including Tommie Frazier was a Quarterback for Nebraska in the mid 1990′s and led the Cornhuskers to back-to-back National championships in 1994 and 1995. Vince Young was an amazing QB in college and only started for two years; if you realize that he only has two years of stats compared to Tebow who started three years. In fact Young threw for a comparable amount of yards to Tebow and ran for more yards with a full year less. There have also been better college players at multiple other positions including Barry Sanders and Archie Griffin at Running back, Deion Sanders at corner back and Hugh Green at defensive end.

Is anyone else catching on to the underlying idea here? Many college stars don’t make it in the NFL. Tommie Frazier wasn’t even drafted when he came out of school. Archie Griffin and Hugh Green were quality NFL guys, but never reached the stardom they had at the college ranks. Vince Young’s ability in the NFL has yet to be fully seen, but he looks to be another college star to fail in the NFL.

Now the argument may be that some of these guys didn’t win Heisman trophies like Tebow did; oh ok. Here is a list of some Heisman winners that really panned out in the NFL: QB Matt Leinhart, QB Eric Crouch, QB Chris Weinke, RB Rashaan Salaam, QB Andre Ware, QB Jason White, RB Ron Dayne, and QB Troy Smith.

Are you getting the idea yet? Many Heisman winners also do not pan out in the NFL, and many of them are quarterbacks who fail to adapt to the pro systems that they are put in after being drafted.

Now lets move on to the real subject of this article: Why Tebow getting glory for being 2-2 in four starts makes absolutely no sense.

  1. The throwing motion – Tebow’s throwing motion is on of the ugliest throwing motion I have ever seen including college, high school, and any other football league. For example why is the ball dropped to his hip? There is only one thing that will happen if he continues to wind up this way, he will continue to fumble the ball. Outside linebackers and defensive ends are taught to come around the edge and go after the throwing arm. When they don’t even have to reach up to get to the throwing arm that’s just another advantage to the defense. The length of the motion also gives an advantage to the secondary as it is much easier to read a pass that takes a long time to develop. This is one of the reasons why Byron Leftwich was never successful in the NFL.
  2. The consistent running even on passing plays – quarterbacks are taught to keep their eyes down field when they roll out of the pocket to scramble. Look at Michael Vick; he keeps his down field when he runs from the pocket and he also keeps the ball in a position where he can throw it if the opportunity presents itself. Now look at Tebow; his eyes are constantly dropping to the defenders and the ball is locked into his arm even if someone gets open while he scrambles he wouldn’t be able to throw it.
  3. The accuracy – Tebow’s accuracy is horrid at best. Most of his passing situations are set up for short passes that give the receivers a chance to make a run after the catch. Most pass plays are wide receiver or running back screens or short throws over the middle. These plays are used to give the QB easier throws to make. The problem with Tebow is that he struggles to make these throws as well. In Sunday’s game he over threw multiple screen plays and missed on a lot of passes. He didn’t start to play well until the Dolphins dropped into the prevent defense (Which we all know only does one thing: prevents you from winning).
I could continue to explain why Tebow’s play is far from what is needed to be an elite QB in the NFL, but I would like to focus on some other reasons as to why Tebow receives the amount of hate he does. Many people dislike Tebow because of the fans that love him. They tout him as the greatest thing since sliced bread even though they have absolutely no factual evidence to prove that Tebow deserves any form of NFL hype.
Beyond just the NFL hype, however, are the Tebow crazies who just make it impossible for other NFL fans to not hate Tebow. Wait what is that? You don’t hate Tebow, but you don’t like him either? Well prepare to have that opinion changed:
But more than anything else; people like me struggle to like Tebow in any way because of people like this:
