Suspects will finally stand trial for 2007 slaying of Sean Taylor

On November 27, 2007 at the hosptial where he was being treated for severe injuries from gunshot wounds. Taylor’s house had been robbed in his absence on November 18, 2007 and on the 26 of that month his house was intruded for a second time. Taylor confronted the men and was shot. Taylor was back home nursing an injury. His long-time girlfriend hid in their bed with their child and called 911 when it was safe.

Taylor suffered a gunshot wound to the leg that hit his femoral artery. He was rushed to the hospital where he went into surgery, but he had lost a lot of blood. Doctors feared he had suffered brain damage due to the amount of blood lost and his heart had stopped twice during the procedure. At 3:30 a.m. the next morning Taylor was pronounced dead due to complications from the gunshot wound.

The Associated Press reports:

MIAMI — A Jan. 30 trial date has been set in Miami for four men accused in the 2007 slaying of Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor.

The date was set Friday by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy at a brief hearing.

Four men from the Fort Myers area are accused of fatally shooting Taylor during an attempted robbery at his home. All have pleaded not guilty and face potential sentences of life in prison if convicted.

A fifth man previously pleaded guilty to murder and burglary charges and is likely to testify against the others.

Taylor was an All-Pro with the Redskins who also starred at the University of Miami.
