Is Boxing Dead?

Is boxing dead?  Not long ago, last Sunday would have been one of the biggest days of the year for sports.  With the running of the Kentucky Derby side-by-side with the legendary Pacman defending his title, the day once would have been huge!

It wasn’t.

Sure the derby got it’s lion share of coverage but boxing, hardly a peep.  Boxing died.  Manny Pacquiao, arguably the greatest boxer of the century, a man who has won titles in eight different divisions, ranging from 112 to 154 pounds was fighting to defend his title Sunday night.  But, enter Boxing’s first problem – cost.  The NBA, NFL, NHL, even the Derby can be watched on your TV for free.  The fight was $55.

Not only was the fight $55, but the fight wasn’t much of a fight to begin with.  Floyd Mayweather Jr. who would’ve made for a fight worth watching, allegedly won’t get in the ring with Pacquiao for less than $100 million.  Yeah, you read that right $100 million, which is where boxing’s second problem comes into play.  For $55 you get to watch Pacman beat up a 39-year-old boxing has-been, because in boxing the best avoid the best until they’re bought out.

Pair these two issues with the piles of medical research on sports concussions and you’ve got a KO.  The sports damn near impossible to defend anymore.

At least, Pacquiao’s got class. He’s a congressman in the Philippines, and is genuinely dedicated to alleviating poverty there.

Boxing’s dead.  I’m not sure whether or not to care.
