Short videos of people making stuff have become quite popular. The internets abound with videos of factories and small batch makers in towns around the world creating. People seem to be genuinely interested in the craftsmanship and design that goes into their goods and they are also becoming more interested in actually making things themselves — be it a leather watch band or some mozzarella cheese.
I am one of these people. I enjoy supporting small batch makers by purchasing the goods they create. I also enjoy watching videos of these designers and creators at work as it inspires me in my own DIY projects.
It is no surprise then that my discovery of the tumblr Those Who Make was a very welcome surprise. On the tumblr you will find videos of those who make everything from cheese to timepieces to handmade axes. My favorite shorts tend to be the ones about food or spirits, two things I dabble in creating and rather enjoy consuming. One of my favorite films is The Smokehouse which follows the victorian grower, gather, hunter and cook Rohan Anderson as he builds himself a smokehouse by hand, with bacon in mind.
