Jerome David “J. D.” Salinger ( January 1, 1919 – January 27, 2010) was an American writer, best know for The Catcher in the Rye. He lived reclusively after much-noticed publications early in his career, he last published an original work in 1965, and gave his last interview in 1980. With over 150 interviews from actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman and others close to the author himself, the true story of J. D. Salinger is brought to light with this documentary from Shane Salerno. In theaters Sept. 6, 2013.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original Quattro, Audi is planning (supposedly) to unveil a production version of the 2010 Quattro Concept. A tribute to the original and legendary 1984 Sport Quattro, the automaker is planning to debut a production version at Frankfurt this September. The new Quattro has a “sharper” shape and incorporates a number of lightweight components such as carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium. Rumors suggests power will come from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that’s good for around 650 hp.

By the 1980′s things were looking up for beer drinkers. The stay-tab was the norm, as it remains today, and cans’ had moved to lightweight aluminum instead of tin-plated steel, and some bottles were starting to use twist caps. For 30 years, beer containers largely remained unchanged, but we are now in a beer container renaissance. Here are some of the most notable advances and oddities.

The Sam Can — Sam Adams

Sam Adams was one of the first next-gen microbreweries to make it to the big leagues, but the company stuck to bottles longer than most. This year, though, they’re rolling out Boston Lager in The Sam Can. Its wide lid allows for “more air flow into your mouth,” has an opening located closer to the middle of the lid for increased aroma enjoyment, and most notably features a taller rim that “places beer at the front of your tongue.”

The wide-mouth can first hit the scene in the late 1990s. No question about that innovation, it allowed ballooning Americans to drown themselves much quicker. Coors Light has not only widened the already wide mouth they also added a vent in 2008, don’t want a vacuum to keep you from chugging. This year, it added another. Apparently, Coors hasn’t heard of a little something called shotgunning, that or they’re trying to class it up.

Special grooves turn a normal pour into spiraling beer shower. Not sure why that matter, but at least it looks nice.

The Bowtie Bud 

Budweiser is being pretty straight forward about the fact their changes are only cosmetic. The new can resembles the company’s bowtie logo.

Who needs wide mouths or vents when you can just take the top off the can? Pennsylvania’s Sly Fox brewery introduced its 360 Lid this year on their Halles Golden Lager.

Walk on Water’s subject is Greg Mallory, a kayaker who happens to be paralyzed from the waist down. Mallory lost the use of his legs after a skiing accident and has found kayaking to be a source of joy in the wake of a terrible tragedy. No excuses.

Pfriem Family Brewers balance traditional brewing techniques with modern technology to create Belgian ales in their certified Green building located on the shores of the Columbia River. The plant features modern solar panels and a rainwater collection systems, while their old world brews combine American hopiness with traditional Belgian styles.

The timing on this one is certainly interesting given the ongoing PRISM scandal.

The Lexus RX 350 is a leader in its class, offering a great balance of luxury, comfort and utilitarianism needed to compete against the likes of the Infiniti JX35, Acura MDX and Volvo XC60. New on the 2013 RX 350 are a plethora of styling and design changes.

The RX 350 offers a very comfortable ride, even for a big dude in the back seat. With comfortable seating for five, the 2013 Lexus RX 350 comes in only one trim with standards that include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, fog lamps, LED running lamps, rear privacy glass, heated mirrors, a power liftgate, keyless ignition/entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats, a leather-wrapped power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, sliding and reclining rear seat, cloth upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a smattering of audio and tech features.

Extra packages can be had like the Display Audio With Back-up Monitor package, which gives you a rearview camera, a larger display screen, the Lexus Remote Touch electronics interface, an Enform suite of app-based features, and a 12-speaker sound system.

In the Premium package, you get a sunroof, power-folding mirrors, roof rails, rearview camera, leather upholstery, and driver memory functions. You can add even more with the Comfort or Navigation packages that include automatic wipers, xenon headlamps, and heated, ventilated front seats. A Luxury package comes as an add-on with the Premium, Comfort and Navigation packages and will give you 19-inch wheels, LED headlamps, 10-way power front seats, heated wood/leather steering wheel, upgraded leather upholstery, and a smog-sensing auto climate control recirculation. Beyond that an available F Sport package will give you all-wheel-drive with 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, exterior styling extras and a different trim and perforated leather upholstery.

Under the hood the 2013 Lexus RX 350 has a 3.5-liter V6 engine good for 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. On the F Sport package all-wheel drive is standard with eight-speed automatic. The 3.5-liter V6 moves the RX 350 along nicely. Merging into traffic and weaving up mountain passes are not a problem for this Lexus. The 2013 Lexus RX 350 I drove got 18 to the gallon in the city and 25 on the highway.

It is hard to find fault with the interior design, the cabin is very comfortable and Lexus has used quality materials throughout. My only gripe is that a few of the driver control buttons, such as steering wheel heat, are at knee level for a larger driver making them impossible to see and hard to reach. The wood trim and high-quality leather are top notch quality and are fitted/finished very nicely.

Passengers have plenty of room in the back seat and comfort is further bolstered with reclining and sliding adjustments. There is also of cargo space with up to 40 cubic feet behind the 40/20/40-split-folding rear seats and 80 cubic feet when the seats are stowed.

Driving the RX 350 is easy and quiet thanks to a well tuned suspension and steering system. The SUV drives more like a car than your dad’s Suburban.

The Halo series has been a little successful with multiple installments, billion-dollar profits, and a live-action television series in the works, it’s safe to say that Bungie knows how to make a hit game. Now they’ve put that talent into an open-world first-person shooter project called Destiny. I think we are in for good things.

If you spend any time on Reddit or tech sites, you’re probably now convinced that the Xbox One is nothing more than the devil spawn incarnate. If you’re anything like me though, your gaming time has shortened over the years and your console has become something more than a pure gaming machine, my Xbox 360 now gets more use playing DVDs and Netflix than it does games.

Looking at the upcoming console war, my decision is already made. I’ll be getting an Xbox One.

If gaming is all you care about, the decision might be easy for you. You’ll pick up a PS4, or more likely you’ll be buying/building a PC. That’s not, however, to say that the Xbox One is a slouch when it comes to exclusive on the console, they have the games I want to play too.

Over the years Microsoft has made the Xbox far more than a gaming machine. The amount of non-gaming content available on the Xbox can’t be matched by Sony on any level, and that isn’t a mistake.

“You can’t just sell it as a convergence device,” Gates says. “You gotta get in there because certain members of the family [i.e., teenage boys] think it’s a must-have type thing. But the way to cement it is as a family experience. And the way that it really makes sense for Microsoft, and we justify this sort of circuitous route that we went down, is because of how it fits in the living room.” (2005 interview with Time Magazine)

The Xbox One offers Netflix, HBO GO, ESPN, live TV with Comcast, Vevo, Amazon Prime, etc… It’s replaced the theater going experience for me, we often buy movies on the Xbox for a fraction of the price it costs to go out. Now that the Xbox will be Blu-ray compatible, the PlayStation lost the one media advantage it had.

Sure, I could pick up an Apple TV or a Roku if I want these things. But when the Xbox One comes in at $500 and the PS4 at $400, that doesn’t make a bit of sense. Why would I double the number of cables going to my TV, put another bow in my media cabinet and require another remote? Regardless, neither of those boxes comes with optical media, so now the $100 premium seems pretty damn cheap.

Sure it’s shitty that Microsoft’s content deals require an Xbox Live Gold membership at $60 bucks a year. Especially, when you have to pay a subscription fee just to access the Netflix subscription you’re already paying for. But, I am willing to pay if it means I have one box to do it all. If it were just about gaming I would undoubtedly give the PlayStation 4 a closer look. Although, I do despise those damn controllers. This isn’t a war about which gaming console is best for me anymore, it’s about which is the best all-around entertainment package. The winner is obvious.

As for the DRM, I buy all my games new anyways. So, I don’t care. As for the always on, ooh scary the Kinect is watching me stuff. Don’t care, I’m sitting at a computer with a camera and mic, there’s another device with two cameras and multiple mics in my pocket. Before the emails flood in, no I wasn’t paid for this post.

A bold new look for iOS. Might get lambasted for looking a bit Windows-ish, but I love it. Clean and crisp with lots of new functionality. This is the most excited I have been for iOS in quite awhile.
